How to Apply Lash Serum Correctly (and the 6 Mistakes That Waste It)
Most disappointing lash serum results come from inconsistent or incorrect application rather than from a weak formula. In our 12-week panel, the testers who applied correctly every night saw roughly twice the length gain of those who missed applications or applied to the wrong place. Here is the technique that works, followed by the mistakes to avoid.

Step 1: start with a clean, dry lash line
Remove all eye makeup, including waterproof mascara residue, and take out contact lenses. Pat the lid dry. Serum applied over makeup, oil or moisturiser sits on top of the residue and never reaches the follicle. If you use an eye cream, apply the serum first and the cream ten minutes later.
Step 2: one thin stroke along the upper lash line
Wipe the applicator on the neck of the bottle so it is damp, not dripping. Draw it once along the base of the upper lashes, from inner to outer corner, exactly where you would draw liquid eyeliner. The goal is to deliver product to the skin where the lashes emerge, not to coat the lashes themselves.
We tested 10 lash serums for 12 weeks under identical conditions. QUALASH Activating Peptide Serum took first place at 9.2 / 10.

Enough serum transfers to the lower lashes when you blink. Applying directly to the lower lid puts product much closer to the eye, which increases the chance of redness, stinging and, with prostaglandin serums, lid darkening.
Step 4: let it dry, then leave it alone
Give the serum two minutes before lying down or applying anything else. Do not rub. If you are applying in the morning, wait until it is fully dry before mascara.
Step 5: every night, for 12 weeks
Lashes grow on a cycle of four to eight weeks. A serum can only affect lashes that begin a growth phase after you start, so the full result takes about 12 weeks. Put the bottle next to your toothbrush; the single best predictor of results in our panel was simply not missing nights.
Step 6: drop to maintenance
After 12 to 16 weeks, most brands recommend two or three applications per week. Our testers who did this held their results; those who stopped entirely returned to baseline over about two months.
The six mistakes that waste serum
Applying too much: excess pools in the corners and migrates into the eye, causing irritation without adding results. Applying to the lashes instead of the lash line: the follicle is in the skin, not on the hair. Applying over makeup or oil: the product never absorbs. Missing nights: each missed night is a lash that grows a little less. Stopping at week four: this is exactly when results are about to become visible. Sharing or contaminating the applicator: it sits next to your eye; keep it clean and replace the bottle every six months.
Frequently asked
Can I apply lash serum twice a day?
Only if the brand recommends it (OLAPLEX LASHBOND does). For most serums once nightly is the tested dose; more does not mean faster.
Should I apply lash serum before or after skincare?
Before. Serum on clean skin, then wait ten minutes, then eye cream or moisturiser.
