Can You Use Lash Serum with Eyelash Extensions? What Technicians Say

By LashTestLabUpdated Jul 31, 20265 min read

Extensions and lash serum are not mutually exclusive, but they do need to be combined carefully. Some formulas loosen adhesive; others are perfectly compatible if applied to the lid rather than the lashes. Many technicians now actively recommend a serum between sets to keep the natural lashes strong enough to carry extensions. Here is what works.

The problem: oils and adhesive

Extension glue is a cyanoacrylate that bonds to the natural lash. Oils break that bond down. Any serum containing castor oil, argan oil, coconut oil or similar will shorten the life of your set. Water-based serums do not affect the adhesive, provided you keep them off the extension base.

Which serums are extension-safe

Check the ingredient list for oils. In our ranking, QUALASH, RevitaLash Advanced, VEGAMOUR GRO, neuLASH and The Ordinary are water-based formulas without oils and are widely used by extension wearers. GrandeLASH-MD is also oil-free. Always confirm with your technician, because some use adhesives with different sensitivities.

From our ranking

We tested 10 lash serums for 12 weeks under identical conditions. QUALASH Activating Peptide Serum took first place at 9.2 / 10.

How to apply with extensions on

Apply to the skin at the base of the upper lash line, behind the extension bond, using one thin stroke. Do not brush through the lashes. Let it dry fully before lying down. Apply at night, not before a fill, and tell your technician which product you are using.

Using serum between sets

This is where serum earns its keep. Extensions and repeated removals thin natural lashes over time, and a thinned lash line eventually cannot hold a full set. Twelve weeks of a peptide serum between sets, or during a break, measurably restores density. Several technicians we spoke to recommend a break of at least one full cycle, eight to twelve weeks, with serum, once a year.

Lash lifts and serum

A lift is a chemical curl of the natural lash. Wait 48 hours after a lift before applying any serum, so the lashes fully set. After that, serum is not just safe but useful: the perm solution dries lashes, and a conditioning peptide serum restores flexibility, which reduces breakage at the curl point. Serum does not affect how long the lift lasts.

Tinting and serum

Tint is a dye on the hair shaft and is unaffected by serum. Apply serum as normal. If you use a prostaglandin serum, be aware that lid darkening can be mistaken for tint transfer; if the colour is on the skin rather than the lashes, it is the serum.

Frequently asked

Will lash serum make my extensions fall out faster?

Only if it contains oils or if you apply it to the extension base. A water-based serum applied to the lid does not affect retention.

Should I stop lash serum before a lash lift?

Not necessary, but skip it the night before and for 48 hours after the appointment.
